Murnauer Moos

Moors, wet meadows, unique flora and fauna – the Murnau Moor is a true natural gem. Many endangered animal and plant species find refuge in the largest contiguous and still-intact moor in Central Europe. Hiking through the heart of the Murnau Moor is the best way to discover this natural habitat. Hardly any other tour in the Blue Land region offers more insight into the nature and history of the moor than the popular Moorland Circular Trail.

The approximately 12 kilometer long hike starts at the hiking car park and the biological station, then leads to Ramsachkircherl, also called “Ähndl” and from there the circular route through the moor area starts. A special highlight on the circular hike is the boardwalk. At the junction of the Moosrundweg in Murnau/Westenried you reach it after about one kilometer. You cross the natural moorland on wooden planks and have a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains. The Bohlenweg was designed as a so-called moor nature trail and therefore offers even closer insights into the flora and fauna. The Murnauer Moos is inhabited by numerous rare animal and plant species. The protection of the foothills of the Alps was not always a given. The rescue and current protection status of the Murnauer Moos is owed to one woman in particular: the "Mooshex" Ingeborg Haeckel. Together with her colleagues, the biologist and long-time head of today's Staffelsee-Gymnasium created the conditions for today's nature reserve. And this commitment was worth it.
