The royal road
Majestic views on the Royal Route
Everyone knows the famous Wittelsbach and fairytale king Ludwig II. But only a few know that the first monument in Germany was dedicated to him in 1894 in Murnau am Staffelsee. The approximately 2,5-hour and four-kilometer-long Royal Trail starts from this very monument. On the historical paths of Bavarian royal families, you can hike to the most beautiful viewpoints of the Blue landes. The wonderful views of the Staffelsee, the Murnauer Moos and the mountains are truly enchanting. At the same time, you can satisfy your thirst for knowledge on this hike. In 17 stations and two information pavilions you will learn all kinds of interesting things about the historic path and the surrounding nature.
In the footsteps of the kings through Murnau
Even King Ludwig II liked to return to Murnau late in the evening after visiting his castles on Lake Starnberg. The good food in the Murnau Hotel Post was always a temptation for the king. Even today, you can still see the cupboard with memorabilia from the king's visits to the Hotel Post on the Obermarkt. A few pictures, a life-size postilion and an altar for the Corpus Christi procession are reminders of the fairytale king's glorious days.
The King's Trail leads you through a small forest to the Luitpold Heights in Murnau and from there up to the Ludwigs Heights. There you will find a majestic view of the Staffelsee. It is best to take your time and linger here for a while. In the information pavilion you will also learn all sorts of interesting facts about the Wittelsbachs and the granting of Murnau market rights by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian. Past an information board about Christoph Probst, the trail then continues along Kohlgruberstrasse to Prinzregent Luitpold Platz, today's Asam Heights. Further stations on the King's Trail then lead to the shore of the Staffelsee and back to the starting point.
Discover the Royal Route guided or on your own
It will remain a secret whether the kings themselves walked this path. But the breathtaking viewpoints of the Murnauer Moos, sugar-coated mountain peaks and sparkling blue lakes suggest this. Even if they are not a royal throne, numerous benches along the route invite you to linger. Enjoy the unique panorama and let your gaze wander over Murnau and the Blue Land.
You are welcome to explore the Royal Route on your own. If you prefer a group tour and more background information, take part in a guided hike with our trained tour guides.
