An art walk through Murnau

On the trail of the paintings of Münter and Kandinsky

The cradle of expressionism around the “Blue Rider“ is located in Murnau, that much is known. The pretty houses and villas, castles and churches of the market town have found their place in numerous pictures in all shapes and colors. An art walk through Murnau opens up new perspectives. On this themed trail, go to exactly the places where Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter her easel Comparing the paintings created there with the present-day locations will give you new insights into the painters' point of view. Art lovers can thus experience the groundbreaking development in painting that began at the beginning of the 20th century.

The first stop on the art walk takes you to the Münter House. The artist couple Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky lived together for several years in this beautiful little house with a garden and blue shutters. Kandinsky immortalized the view of Murnau am Staffelsee from the Münter House in more than 30 versions in his paintings. You can enjoy the same view directly behind the house on Hochanger. You then walk a few streets to the Murnau Untermarkt. A large number of paintings by the two artists were created here too. See for yourself how Gabriele Münter must have perceived the hustle and bustle that she painted in her painting “Chaff Loads in Winter”.

The Kirchsteig continues to Bauhoferweg. There you will find Murnau's St. Nicholas Church, which Kandinsky bathed in a mystical evening light in his 1909 painting. The grave of his long-term partner Gabriele Münter is also located in the Murnau cemetery. The next stop on the art walk takes you to Lindenburgweg. Opposite number 35 you will see the house that Münter depicted in her 1908 painting "At the Lindenburg". Via Viehmarktplatz you will finally reach Schloßbergstrasse and then the castle courtyard. Here, under colorful light impressions, one of Kandinsky's early Murnau paintings was created: "Schloßhof I". The walk finally leads you back to Obermarkt via another viewpoint in Grüngasse, with its breathtaking view of the mountains.
